As the atom is the smallest discrete unit of matter, so the scene is the smallest discrete unit in fiction; it is the smallest bit of fiction that contains the essential elements of story. You don't build a story or a book of words and sentences and paragraphs -- you build it of scenes, one piled on top of the next, each changing something that came before, all of them moving the story inexorably and relentlessly forward.

Most of the books I've written have started with a map. Not with an idea, or a character, or a theme. With a hand-drawn map, doodled out first while I was sitting and keeping someone else company, or while I was on break, or when I couldn't think of what to write and had no ideas to speak of and knew that if I drew a map something would come to me. Some of the maps were fairly artistic from the start. Some began on napkins or the backs of throw-away paper, and only became things of any artistic merit after they'd served their initial purpose of handing me an idea for a novel.

Unfit for Society Recommendations is by Victoria who swore she wouldn't get involved in HP fandom and she hasn't well, unless you count writing about 30 HP stories as involved. She doesnt. That hasnt stopped her from reading and loving some of the stories though. Especially that yummy Sirius/Remus slash. Stories may contain OotP spoilers. Read at your own risk. All links open in a new browser window.

You have two choices with manuscript formatting -- you can either format first or format last. I format first -- that is, I do the whole novel in exactly the same format in which I will submit it. It uses more paper for print-outs, but I can copyedit my work easily, and I don't have to mess around with it later -- when the words are done, so is the formatting. Once you've decided when you're going to format, however, the next question is ... how? I use two formats -- one for novels, and one for short work, both fiction and nonfiction. I have never had a complaint about my formatting, I have never had work bounced for formatting, so I know that both of these formats are professionally acceptable. These are not the only correct manuscript formats out there...

You've decided you want to write a book. Terrific. Maybe you've even tried it a few times, but haven't gotten one all the way to the finish line. It happens. I had a slew of thirty-page novel starts before I finally found out how to start a novel that I could finish. See, that's the trick. You have to start the novel, but you have to have planned to finish it before you type the first word on page one. And that means laying some groundwork. What steps do you need to take to have the best chance of finishing the book you're starting with such enthusiasm? Here are a list of suggestions that will help you start the novel in such a way that you can hope to reach the end.

A lot of fiction by beginning writers, and unfortunately a significant amount of fiction by published writers, is plagued by paper people – characters who never really come to life on the page. The published writers who still get away with this do so because they’ve learned to tell a story so compelling that editors will buy from them anyway. Beginners really don’t have that luxury, and paper people will kill a sale as fast as anything. Paper people fall into categories – and that is much of their problem. You have Evil Villains, Oppressed Virginal Heroines, Naïve-But-Stalwart Heroes, and Smart-Ass Sidekicks, among other common types. (Depending on genre, you’ll meet Hookers-With-Hearts-of-Gold, Strong-But-Silent Sheriffs, Nubile-Young-Secretaries-Who-Always-Think-They’re-Too-Thin, Brilliant-But-Distracted Scientists, Ever-Dedicated Cops, and the inescapable Fearless Soldiers.) You recognize them as I list them, and can probably name as many novels where they feature prominently as I can.

With almost 200 pieces of slash fiction in the Harry Potter ship this author has contributed a lot to the HP Genre. All stories are all male/male relationships involving some level of sexuality and in all cases the main characters are of the age of consent.
